Varsity and Junior Varsity Teams

Varsity

  • Each meet, 7 runners will run in the varsity race.
  • If necessary, attendance will be used as a tie-breaker to determine who runs varsity at the next meet. For example, if there are two comparable athletes and one has an unexcused absence and the other does not, the one without the unexcused absence will get to run varsity.

Junior Varsity

  • All athletes who did not earn one of the 7 varsity positions will run in the JV race at meets.
  • Racing JV is a fantastic forum to develop, race hard, get better, have fun, feel good about yourself and be your best. It’s great to view JV racing as an exciting opportunity and not a punishment or as “second best”.

Varsity Lettering & JV Honor Roll Standards

Varsity Lettering

  • Any athlete (varsity or JV) who runs a time of 21:15 or less over the 5 kilometer distance at any meet throughout the season can earn a varsity letter in cross country. (Occasionally, a course may be labeled a 5k but somehow be short. In an extreme and obvious outlier situation where nearly everyone suddenly runs a huge personal best, coaches reserve the right to negate that race as a qualifying race for lettering. This will not apply to the conference or section meet.)
  • In addition to running a 21:15, an athlete must have no more than 1 unexcused absence during the season, and must have participated regularly in practices and meets, to earn the varsity letter.
  • Seniors who are in good academic standing and who have demonstrated a positive attitude and strong commitment to the team will earn a varsity letter.
  • Coaches discretion.

Junior Varsity Honor Roll Standard

  • Any athlete, who did not letter the previous year, who runs a time of 23:18 or less over the 5 kilometer distance at any meet throughout the season has met the JV Honor Roll Standard.
  • Coaches discretion.
